A Note from L. Courtney
Conversations with Earth was not a book I set out to write.
It found me.
It began quietly in my diaries many years ago, during a journey through Canada and Alaska. At the time, I didn't fully understand the words coming to me, or why I felt so compelled to write them down. I certainly didn't have the courage to share them, so for many years they stayed private, hidden in a box in my office cupboard.
Life, however, had other plans.
My work as a filmmaker took me to the edges of our changing planet, from Antarctica and Greenland to the Amazon, the Arctic, Himalayan foothills, remote islands and across our vast ocean. I worked alongside scientists and Indigenous knowledge holders, listened to communities, farmers, and Inuit Hunters experiencing profound change, and witnessed extraordinary beauty alongside the unmistakable signs of a planet under pressure. Slowly, a jigsaw began to assemble, and my mind started to connect the dots.
The science, the journeys, the people I met in unexpected places, the questions I had been asking, and the words waiting quietly in my diaries came together. I began to see, hear and understand our Earth-Gaia differently, not simply as the place upon which we live, but as an extraordinary living system of forests, rivers, atmosphere, a blue ocean, and energy and life, each deeply connected to the other, and to us.
Perhaps the greatest challenge of our time is not simply to understand how our Earth is changing, but to remember our relationship with Mother Nature, the value of all living things and with each other.
That is where my book begins.
Conversations with Earth is not intended to give you all the answers. It invites you to become curious about the questions, to pause, to wonder, and to expand your consciousness about how Earth's energetics really work.
To look at our world and perhaps our place within it a little differently, and most importantly, to listen. Because after all these years, I finally understood:
These conversations were never mine to keep.
They belong to all of us.
